How to Take Passport Photos at Home (Step-by-Step)
Updated 2024-02-10 · 7 min read
What You Need
- A smartphone camera (any modern phone works)
- A plain white or light-colored wall
- Good lighting (natural daylight is best)
- A tripod or someone to take the photo
- PhotoPrint Pro (for processing and printing)
Step 1: Set Up the Background
Stand in front of a plain white or light-colored wall. Make sure there are no shadows, patterns, or objects visible behind you. A wall near a window works great for natural light.
Step 2: Lighting
Face a window for soft, even lighting. Avoid direct sunlight which creates harsh shadows. If shooting at night, use two lamps placed at 45-degree angles in front of you.
Step 3: Camera Settings
- Use your phone's rear camera (better quality than selfie camera)
- Set to the highest resolution available
- Turn off flash
- Enable HDR mode if available
- Hold the camera at eye level, about 1.5 meters away
Step 4: Pose Correctly
- Look directly at the camera
- Keep a neutral expression (slight smile is okay for some countries)
- Keep both ears visible
- Don't tilt your head
- Remove glasses and head coverings
Step 5: Process with PhotoPrint Pro
Upload your photo to PhotoPrint Pro. Our tool will automatically:
- Remove and replace the background
- Detect and center your face
- Crop to the correct passport dimensions
- Enhance brightness and sharpness
- Arrange on a printable sheet with cut marks
Step 6: Print
Download the PDF or JPG sheet and print on photo paper. Set your printer to "actual size" (no scaling) for correct dimensions. Use glossy photo paper for best results.
