US passport photos must be exactly 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm). This square format is unique to the United States and is also used for US visa applications.

Key Requirements

• Taken within the last 6 months
• Full face, front view with neutral expression
• Plain white or off-white background
• No glasses (since November 2016)
• No head coverings (except religious)
• Photo printed on photo-quality paper

Digital vs Print Requirements

The US State Department accepts both digital and printed photos. For online applications, submit a digital photo (600x600 pixels minimum). For paper applications, submit two identical printed photos.
